Account Types in Sphero EduUpdated 10 months ago

Interested in setting up an account for use with Sphero Edu? Please review the information below to ensure you chose the right option.

Sphero Edu uses the Sphero Central platform for account creation and storage of data. In the document below, Sphero Central will be used when referencing the accounts and platform services used with the Sphero Edu applications. 

"Quick Start" or Accounts?

Firstly, it's worth noting that signing up for an account for use with Sphero Edu is optional. You can access the main features of the app without an account, including creating programs for your robot, and working on educational lessons. If you are unsure if you need an account, you can always start the app in "Quick Start" mode and decide later. At any point you can create an account if you want to take advantage of these benefits:

  1. Program Storage: Cloud storage and sync for your programs, which allows you to access your programs on any compatible device.
  2. Lesson Storage: Cloud storage and sync for lesson progress. This means you can pick up and continue lesson progress wherever you left off, on any compatible device.
  3. Lesson Publishing: For applicable accounts, you can create custom lessons and share them with students/children, or publish them to the community lesson section.
  4. Classes/Families: For applicable accounts, you can set up classes/families and manage accounts for your students or children. You can also manage their assignments.
When you create an account, your data is stored on our servers as part of the Sphero Central platform. Take a look at our Privacy Policy and Edu Privacy Policy to learn more about how we handle and process data.

Account Types in Sphero Central

 There are four core Sphero Central account types for use with Sphero Edu, each with specific capabilities: 

  1. Teacher: Intended for instructors in schools and education settings. Teacher accounts can create/manage classes and student accounts. They can also assign lessons and create custom lessons to share with students and the community. Sign in options for Teacher accounts include: Clever, Google, and standard accounts (email/username and password).
  2. Student: Intended for students in schools and education settings. Student accounts are created and managed by Teachers, and are intended to allow students to work on programs and assigned lessons. Sign in options for Student accounts include: Clever, Google, and standard accounts (username and password).
Generally speaking, students should not create their own accounts. Rather, teachers should create a Teacher account, then create accounts for their students with the class management tools. If you are a student viewing this page, please contact your teacher about setting up an account for you.
  1. Parent/Guardian: Intended for parents/guardians at home. Parent/Guardian accounts can can create and manage accounts for their children. They can also assign lessons and create custom lessons to share with their children and the community. Sign in options for Parent/Guardian accounts include: Google, Sign in With Apple, and standard accounts (email/username and password).
  2. Learner: Intended for general users and children at home. Learner accounts can be created two ways. If you are over the age gate for your region (ex: 13 or older in the United States), then you can create your own account. If you are under the age gate for your region (ex: 12 or younger in the United States), then you cannot create your own account and will need a parent to create an account for you. Learner accounts cannot create or manage classes/families like Teacher and Parent/Guardian accounts. Sign in options for Learner accounts include: Google, Sign in With Apple, and standard accounts (email/username and password).

Class Codes

Class codes are intended to be a quick way for teachers to give their students access to basic account features, including saving program progress and working on assigned lessons.
